Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Cruise Reviews by Cruise Critic

Cruise Line Overview

The world's second-largest cruise line, Royal Caribbean International (originally Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines) began in the late 1960s as a consortium of Norwegian ship owners who wanted to get in on the rapidly expanding American market. Ever since its first ship, Song of Norway (no longer in the fleet), debuted in 1970, the company has prided itself on introducing new shipboard innovations. After completing its first three ships (the others were Nordic Prince and Sun Viking) by 1972, Royal Caribbean "stretched" its first two ships and built the much larger Song of America in 1982. These early Royal Caribbean ships became the prototype for virtually all cruise ships since. But Royal Caribbean's biggest splash came in 1988 with the monumental Sovereign of the Seas, the very first mega-ship of the modern era. While only midsized by today's standards, at over 70,000 tons, Sovereign of the Seas was massive in its day, and completely dwarfed every competitor of the era. The most sensational feature -- aside from sheer size -- was the introduction of the first modern shipboard atrium, complete with glass elevators and a grand piano, reminiscent of an opulent hotel -- but with a view no hotel could match. Not content to wait for other lines to catch up, the even larger sister ships, Monarch of the Seas and Majesty of the Seas, followed in quick succession, along with the smaller Nordic Empress, the first ship designed for cruises shorter than a week. Royal Caribbean also bought Admiral Cruises, a company specializing in short cruises, and turned its nearly new Stardancer into Royal Caribbean's Viking Serenade after a massive refit. (To date, Viking Serenade, which left the fleet in 2002, remains the only ship to fly the Royal Caribbean flag that wasn't built for the company.) By the early 1990s Royal Caribbean moved on to another challenge: designing ships for use outside its traditional cruising grounds in the Caribbean. While the company had sent some of its oldest, smallest ships farther afield to destinations like Alaska and Europe -- Royal Caribbean hadn't built a ship specially designed for worldwide cruising. This changed in 1995 with the introduction of Legend of the Seas, a spectacular new ship that brought Royal Caribbean into a whole new era. Smaller than the Sovereign-class ships, Legend was by far the most luxurious ship Royal Caribbean had ever built, with bigger cabins, more space per passenger and a wider variety of public areas and open decks. The popular shipboard mini-golf course was introduced, as was Royal Caribbean's now-signature adults-only indoor/outdoor pool area, the Solarium, one of the most impressive shipboard spaces that had been built to date. Legend was closely followed by its sister, Splendour of the Seas, and then by two pairs of slightly larger near-sisters: Grandeur and Enchantment of the Seas, and Rhapsody and Vision of the Seas. At the same time, between 1995 and 1999, the company disposed of the four original ships and replaced them with the new Vision-class ships designed specifically for worldwide itineraries. Having established itself outside the Caribbean, Royal Caribbean turned back to developing its core market. In the mid 1990s, as the Vision-class ships entered service to rave reviews, the company began planning a new ship that would redefine the cruise industry as much, if not more than Sovereign of the Seas had in the previous decade. Code-named "Project Eagle," the ship began sailing in 1999 as Voyager of the Seas -- and completely blew away every mega-ship that had come before. With features like an ice rink, rock wall and indoor promenade, Voyager of the Seas was the most innovative ship design in decades, the first ship that genuinely felt more like a resort than a ship. Four ships would follow, and the Voyager class became the defining mega-ship design of the early 21st century. Meanwhile, four Radiance-class ships were built in the early 2000s as a follow-up to the Vision-class vessels of the 1990s. Similarly designed for worldwide cruising, they are larger, with more balconies, dining choices, public areas and greater luxury all around. After the launch of so many new ships, the company's formerly innovative older ships were beginning to look old and tired. Royal Caribbean spent millions of dollars to refit Monarch of the Seas, Empress of the Seas (formerly Nordic Empress), Sovereign of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas (including a "stretch" of Enchantment) and Majesty of the Seas. Despite the refurbishments, a few ships just didn't cut it. Royal Caribbean transferred two ships to its Spanish subsidiary, Pullmantur, in 2008: Empress of the Seas in March and Sovereign of the Seas in October. Monarch of the Seas was transferred to Pullmantur in 2013, and Majesty of the Seas will be transferred in 2016. In recent years, the big news at Royal Caribbean has been ever-larger ships. In 2006, the line debuted Freedom of the Seas, an enlarged, enhanced version of the Voyager-class design that introduced new features like a water park and onboard surfing to the array of Voyager-class amenities. The Freedom class also includes Liberty of the Seas and Independence of the Seas. In fall 2009, the line launched the 225,282-ton, 5,400-ton Oasis of the Seas. A year later, sister ship Allure of the Seas debuted. A third Oasis-class ship, Harmony of the Seas, will debut in 2016. At over 40 percent larger than Freedom of the Seas, Oasis and Allure are the biggest cruise ships in the world. The strategy of increasing size with each class ended when the 158,000-ton, 4,100-passenger Quantum of the Seas, the first "Project Sunshine" vessel, launched in fall 2014. Sister ship, Anthem of the Seas debuted in spring 2015. A third Quantum-class ship, called Ovation of the Seas, will launch in mid-2016, and the line will add a fourth, yet-unnamed ship to the class in 2019. Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas represent the line's first serious foray into Asia; Quantum of the Seas sails full-time out of Hong Kong, and Ovation will homeport in Tianjin when it debuts in June 2016, before heading to Sydney, Australia, in December 2016.

The Fleet

The 225,282-ton, 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas launched in December 2009 as the world's biggest cruise ship, but sister-ship Allure of the Seas quickly stole the title (by a foot!) when it debuted in fall 2010. A third Oasis-class ship, Harmony of the Seas, will launch in 2016. The class is a whopping 40 percent larger than the previous title holders, Royal Caribbean's Freedom-class trio. The 158,000-ton, 4,100-passenger Quantum of the Seas, the first "Project Sunshine" vessel, launched in 2014, followed by sister ship Anthem of the Seas in spring 2015. Third-in-class Ovation of the Seas will join the fleet in 2016, and a fourth, yet-unnamed ship will debut in 2019. After the Oasis- and Quantum-class ships, the biggest and newest ships in the fleet are the 154,407-ton, 3,634-passenger Freedom-class ships, Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas and Independence of the Seas. They feature virtually everything you could want in a cruise ship. The active set can enjoy ice skating, rock climbing, surfing, mini-golf and more. Other amenities include three alternative restaurants, an indoor promenade with parades and more, and an array of bars and lounges catering to every taste. Next-largest are the Voyager-class ships: Built between 1999 and 2003, Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas and Navigator of the Seas are 138,000 gross tons and carry 3,114 passengers. Though slightly smaller than the Freedom-class ships, the Voyager-class ships are very similar in design and carry most of the same amenities. The line's biggest and newest midsize ships are the Radiance class. The 90,000-ton, 2,500-passenger Radiance, Brilliance, Jewel and Serenade of the Seas were built between 2001 and 2003, and are the biggest Royal Caribbean ships that can fit through the Panama Canal. They lack the indoor promenade, ice rink and some other Voyager/Freedom-class features, but offer some of the most elegant interiors at sea. Unique features include the Colony Club, an elegant, British Colonial-themed nightclub that includes the world's first stabilized, seagoing billiard tables. Somewhat smaller than the Radiance-class ships are the Vision-class ships, three pairs of sister ships. The first pair, Legend and Splendour of the Seas, were built in 1995 and 1996 respectively. At 70,000 gross tons and carrying 2,076 passengers, these ships are almost intimate by Royal Caribbean standards. Grandeur and Enchantment of the Seas were built in 1996 and 1997 respectively. Grandeur remains in its original 74,000-ton, 2,446 passenger configuration, while Enchantment was "stretched" -- adding a new, midsection -- in 2005 and is 80,000 tons and carries 2,446 passengers. Finally, Rhapsody of the Seas and Vision of the Seas were built in 1997 and 1998 respectively, and are 78,491 tons and carry 2,435 passengers. While they have fewer balconies and dining options than the newer ships, they remain excellent modern cruise ships for Royal Caribbean's less-popular routes, often from secondary homeports. The remaining Sovereign-class ship, Majesty of the Seas, sails the line's shortest three- and four-night itineraries. Majesty of the Seas was built in 1992, and is 73,000 gross tons and carries over 2,744 passengers. While its cabins are smaller than the other ships in the fleet, it is an excellent ship for shorter cruises. The class' namesake, Sovereign of the Seas, was transferred to Royal Caribbean's Spanish subsidiary, Pullmantur, in October 2008. Majesty of the Seas will share the same fate in spring 2016.

Blackjack Caribbean Stud Poker 3 Card Poker Let it Ride Roulette Craps Slot Machines

Blackjack

In Blackjack, you win if you get a higher hand than the dealer without going over 21. Should you go over 21 (Bust), you lose immediately. Face cards count as 10, aces are either 1 or 11, and all other cards are face value. The players and the dealer each get two cards. If your first two cards total, for example, 15, you can "Stand" (take no additional cards) or you can "Hit" (ask for additional cards, one at a time). You can indicate your decision to hit or stand by using hand gestures. The dealer will be happy to show you how. After each player in turn has taken all the extra cards he wants, the dealer exposes the "Hole" card and hits with 16 or less and soft 17, stands on hard 17. Should the dealer bust, you win. Blackjack: An ace and a 10-value card is "Blackjack" and pays you 3 dollars for every 2 you bet, unless the dealer too, has a Blackjack, in which case you "Push" (neither win nor lose). Splitting Pairs: You can split pairs and play them as two separate hands by placing another equal bet on the table. You can split up to three times for a total of four separate hands. If you split Aces, you get one card on each ace. If you draw a ten-value card, it will count as 21, not a Blackjack. Doubling Down: You can double your bet and get one additional card only. You can double any two cards and you can double after you split pairs. Insurance: If the dealer's up card is an Ace, you can place an "Insurance" bet of up to half your original bet. If the dealer has Blackjack, your insurance bet pays 2 to 1. If you have Blackjack and take insurance, you are immediately offered "Even Money." SINGLE DECK BLACKJACK: Very similar to the game of Blackjack with the following exceptions: No mid-deck entry; players must wait until the shuffle to join this game No double down after splitting Blackjact pays 6 to 5 Insurance offered but not even money

Caribbean Stud Poker

This is a simplified five-card stud poker game. You put up your ante and are dealt five cards. When you've looked at your hand, if you choose to play, you must bet double your ante. If you fold, you lose your ante. The dealer then exposes his cards. If the dealer does not have Ace/King or higher, you win even money for your ante. If the dealer has at least Ace/King and his hand is higher than yours, he collects your ante and your bet. If your hand beats the dealers, you win even money on your ante and you win odds on your bet, as follows: Payout Odds: Less:1 to 12 Pairs:2 to 13 of a Kind:3 to 1Straight:4 to 1Flush:5 to 1Full House:7 to 14 of a Kind:20 to 1Straight Flush:50 to 1Royal Flush:100 to 1 Progressive Jackpot: After making your ante bet, place another chip in the slot in front of your bet. Regardless of whether you win or lose the hand, you'll get the following: Royal Flush:JackpotStraight:10% of the Meter4 of a Kind:1% of the MeterFull House:$50 USDFlush:$25 USD Rules of Play: If playing the progressive jackpot, the play is responsible for ensuring that the "indicator light" is on.Players may not exchange or communicate information regarding their hands.Incorrect amount of cards to either the player or dealer constitutes a misdeal.

3 Card Poker

A fast and easy way to learn and play a fairly simple game of deck poker, where players make an Ante wager to obtain their hand. Play Ante: Bet on the ANTE spot to play against the dealer's hand. It's just you and the dealer! If you bet on the ANTE spot and like your hand, you must place a wager on the PLAY spot that is equal to the ANTE. It's your 3 card poker hand against the dealer's 3 card poker hand (dealer qualifies with a "Queen" or better) - best hand wins! Play Pair Plus: Bet the PAIR PLUS spot to bet your own hand. If your hand contains a pair or better, you win! It's just you and the cards. Play Both: It's you and the cards for a pair or better; it's you and the dealer for the best 3 card poker hand. You must also make the PLAY wager or you will forfeit the ANTE wager. Ante Bonus: If you make the ANTE and PLAY wagers you may win a bonus payout even if the dealer doesn't qualify, and even if the dealer's hand beats your hand. Pairs Plus Pay Tables: Straight Flush:40 to 13 of a Kind:30 to 1Straight:6 to 1Flush:3 to 1Pair:1 to 1 Ante Pay Table: Straight Flush:4 to 13 of a Kind:3 to 1Straight:1 to 1

Let it Ride

Bonus "Let it Ride": is based on the five card stud poker game and is fun and easy to learn. The players do not play against the dealer or the other players. Each player places three equal bets and may place a $1 side bet on the red spot to be eligible for "bonus" payouts. Each player then receives three cards. The dealer receives two cards, both face down. The object is simply for the player to get a good poker hand by using his own hand and the dealer's two down cards. After looking at his three cards, and without seeing the dealer's two down cards, the player must decide if he has a good poker hand. If so, he "Lets it Ride". If he cannot make a good poker hand, the player indicates by using hand gestures that he would like his first bet back. The dealer then turns one of his cards up. The player decides again whether to "Let it Ride" or indicates by hand gesture for their second bet back. Bet number 3 is a contract bet and will either win or lose with the player's hand. Unlike the first two bets, this bet may not be taken back. All players then lay their cards face down and the dealer exposes his second card, after which the dealer turns over the players cards and pays out according to the payout schedule. Players should refrain from showing their hands to other players. Payouts: Royal Flush:500 to 1Straight:200 to 14 of a Kind:50 to 1Full House:11 to 1Flush:8 to 1Straight:5 to 13 of a Kind:3 to 1Two Pair:2 to 1Pair of 10's or better:1 to 1Bonus Payouts: Royal Flush:$5000Straight:$20004 of a Kind:$100Full House:$75Flush:$50Straight:$253 of a Kind:$8Two Pair:$4

Roulette

Roulette is simple to play and enjoy. Each player is given chips of a different color. You can bet on red or black, even or odd, and on any number or combination of numbers. Winners are paid after each spin, and a new game begins. Color chips have no value on any other game so it is important to exchange them for cash value chips before leaving the table. Straight Up: Covers any number, including 0 & 00, pays 35 to 1. Split: Covers any two adjoining numbers, pays 17 to 1. Row: Covers all three numbers in the row, pays 11 to 1. Corner: Covers all adjoining numbers, pays 8 to 1. Five Numbers: Covers 1,2,3,0 & 00, pays 6 to 1. Six Numbers: Covers all six numbers in two adjoining rows, pays 5 to 1. Column Bet: Covers 12 numbers in the same column, pays 2 to 1. Dozen: Covers all 12 numbers in the same section, pays 2 to 1. Red or Black, Even or Odd: Covers all red or black, even or odd numbers, pays 1 to 1.

Craps

Craps is fast-paced, exciting, and after you've spent a little time playing it, surprisingly simple. Bets on Come Out Roll (First Roll of the Dice): Pass Line: Automatic Winners: 7, 11Automatic Losers: 2,3,12Any other number becomes the "point."You win if the shooter rolls his point again before rolling a 7 and lose if he rolls a 7 first. Don't Pass Line (Opposite of Pass Line): Automatic Winners: 2,3Automatic Losers: 7,11Stand Off: 12Any other number becomes the "point."You win if the shooter rolls a 7 before repeating the point and lose if he rolls the point again before rolling a 7. Bets on Rolls After the Point has been Established: Come Line: Treats the next roll exactly like a Pass Line bet on the Come Out Roll. Field Bets: This is a one-roll bet that you can make at any time. If 2,3,9,10,11 or 12 is rolled, you win, and if any other number is rolled, you lose. Don't Come: Treats the next roll exactly like a Don't Pass Line bet on the Come Out Roll. Place Bets: You can place a bet on an individual number and increase, decrease, or remove it at any time. You win if the number you select is rolled before a seven is thrown. These bets are given to the dealer, who puts them in the proper location. Hardway Bets: You can bet that the shooter will roll a 4,6,8 or 10 the "hard way"; that is, with a pair of 2's, 3's, 4's or 5's. If a 7 is rolled, or if the number bet on is rolled, but not rolled the hard way, the bet loses. One-Roll Bets: On any roll you can bet that a 2 craps, 3 craps, 7, 11 12 craps, or any craps are rolled.

Slot Machines

Our casinos offer a wide variety of traditional games such as Double Diamond, Triple Diamond, Triple Stars, Big Times Pay and Triple Double Stars to modern marvels such as Wheel of Fortune, Cleopatra, Hoot Loot, Texas Tea and Enchanted Unicorn. Our next generation slot machines offer many new features to enhance the guest experience. Most notable are the following:br> Multi-Denomination: Player selectable denomination allows the guest the choice of different denominations without the need to switch slot machines. Also, allows new denominations not previously available such as 2, 10, 50 or $2 games. Tokenization: For your convenience, lower denomination games, which play as 1, 2, 5, 10 or 20, may be configured to accept and pay in US quarters. This means having to carry a lot less coins back to the Cash Desk when you win. Bonus Features: New and exciting bonus features and free spins are incorporated into game play giving the player extra chances to win. This is mainly on our low denominations slot machines. Other Interesting Features Bill Acceptors: All machines on the casino floor accept $1 - $100 bills. Locate the bill acceptor on the machine and insert the desired amount. You may collect any unused credits when moving from one machine to another. Progressive Jackpots: Some machines have a top jackpot that steadily increases with play. The player has the opportunity to win a higher jackpot than what would normally be offered. Look for display meters showing the current jackpot amount. Credits: All machines pay winning combinations directly to a credit meter. Use your credits to play. Unused credits can be collected at any time. Video Poker: Game King Poker has become the game of choice for casino players. It offers several different types of poker games in one cabinet. Look for our comfortable slant top or ergonomic upright Game King Poker games. Coin Pusher: No casino would be complete without a fun, easy game. Coin pushers move quarters forward: forcing coins, money, and prizes over the edge into your pocket. Player Tracking program: We now have 5 ships with automated player tracking incorporated into the slot machines. The vessels with this feature are Sovereign of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Jewel of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas. The Liberty of the Seas will be our sixth ship with this feature installed. There is no need to sign up, simply insert your SeaPass card whenever playing a slot machine and you will earn valuable reward points that can be exchanged for prizes. Ticket in Ticket out: We presently have two ships with Ticket in Ticket out (TITO) technology. They are Sovereign of the Seas and Freedom of the Seas. Among the services that illustrate this commitment to fun entertainment are the gambling casinos found on most of the ICCL member vessels. Industry guidelines address the equipment, conduct of games, internal controls, and customer service for casinos on cruise ships. The guidelines generally foster the following goals: To provide reasonable rules by which all gambling onboard member vessels is conducted to ensure fair and professional gaming at the highest level of integrity to the player. To provide internal controls upon which passengers can rely to assure them that the gambling is operated with the utmost integrity. To provide a form of entertainment for passengers that is responsive to the customers' requests.

Facilities and Equipment

All equipment purchased and installed on cruise vessels will meet the regulatory standards of the Nevada Gaming Control Board or other licensed jurisdiction for payback and internal software.

Rules of Play

Each cruise line will provide a gaming guide setting forth the rules of play for their casino. These rules of play shall generally follow those established for casinos in Nevada, New Jersey, or England. These house rules will also be made available in every casino. Each member line will post at every gaming table minimum and maximum betting limits for each game.

Internal Controls

All shipboard gambling operations will be inspected by each member line's internal audit department on a regular basis, not to exceed 12 months. All casinos will have detailed internal control procedures concerning the cash and coin counts, casino cage procedures and other processes, similar to licensed jurisdictions. Each line will separate the operation of the casino from the financial aspects of the casino as clearly as possible, including specific duties for cashiers and table gaming staff.

Fellow Passengers

For the most part, Royal Caribbean attracts a wide variety of North American passengers, mostly between the ages of 30 and 55 on the seven-night and shorter cruises, and 50 and over on cruises longer than seven nights. Cruises from the U.K. -- as well as Mediterranean, Asia and Australia cruises -- attract a significant number of locals, as well as Royal Caribbean's usual North Americans. Seven-night and shorter cruises are also popular with families, especially during American school vacation periods, when the ships will often be filled to every upper berth. Quantum of the Seas is aimed squarely at the Asian market, so passengers will be from Asia and, to a lesser extent, Australia.
